Artist Bio
A Redcar-based music-oriented artist, operating under the artist pseudonym 'Ja'. Originally a singer-songwriter, many of my compositional techniques derive from Blues and Country music. Over the last four years however, experimental electronica artists like Marina Herlop and Caterina Barbieri have been a primary source of inspiration. As such, despite acoustic-dominant music traditionally featuring minimal post-processing, maximal post-processing is a major aspect within each works. More recently, the extreme manipulation of acoustic samples has led to the tracks being more Avant-garde, than singer-songwriter.
This music journey started at the age of 12, singing and playing acoustic guitar. Over time, recording and production techniques were also adopted . Now, 11 years later, my creative workflow consists primarily of recording & sampling acoustic elements, then running the audio through extensive processing software. These acoustic elements include local field-recordings, acoustic-guitar performances, vocals, foley, and vinyl Koto [1] samples.
Intricate sound-design is a major aspect within each work. The techniques commonly used to manipulate the audio-samples include buffing [2], wavetable-synthesis [3], and chopping [4]. These elements are then programmed to formulate the melodies, harmonies, and rhythms which coagulate to form the end piece. Often, the audio-processing leads to the end sound being unrecognisable from its original state. Working in this way results in highly detailed sounds which can be convincingly perceived as something present in a natural environment.

The painting/cutout is based on a photo from the 1930s when constructing skyscrapers became a strong drive, and the competition to build the world’s tallest building was fierce. I used this image as a symbol of human desire. I replaced the ridiculous-looking hats in the photo with more recent tall buildings, indicating ongoing development and devastation to our environment, using a lone frog to represent nature.
