Daniel Carey
Artist Bio
My name is Daniel Carey, I am a painter and second year Fine Art student.
While making, I like the sense of timelessness I feel - painting spaces that have no attachment to any time or period. In these particular works I was inspired by Hunters in the Snow by Pieter Bruegel, in a similar vein, I have tried to slow down time, I have left only what is essential, like elements of nature, key colours and plenty of breathing room. I'd encourage viewers to speculate on what they see.
Relevant Previous Experience
I have been apart of several student shows, in Leeds and in Middlesbrough.
I exhibited my large piece at MIMA Art + Social no23 on April 3rd 2025, and it got some good responses but as the piece is concerned with the passage of time it would suit this exhibition well, and I'd like to have some conversation about this topic in relation to other works in the show, along with the two smaller pieces that I have uploaded that aided in its development.
I am exhibiting two postcards for a group exhibition in Iceland set up by www.hardpainting.com titled "Postcards for Seyðisfjörður".
Selected Work
Name: Time Is the Substance I am Made Of
A smaller semi-abstract painting that shows the feeling of thoughts or things appearing at a certain moment, there is a figure in the left corner. Along with its timelessness there is a placelessness that goes along with it like being lost in a dream.
The painting/cutout is based on a photo from the 1930s when constructing skyscrapers became a strong drive, and the competition to build the world’s tallest building was fierce. I used this image as a symbol of human desire. I replaced the ridiculous-looking hats in the photo with more recent tall buildings, indicating ongoing development and devastation to our environment, using a lone frog to represent nature.
