Ron Crichton
Artist Bio
Ron Crichton is an emerging artist exploring Middlesbrough’s industrial heritage and the surrounding evolving coastline. Using bold textures in oil and acrylic, he abstracts the decay of abandoned factories, rusting machinery, shifting shores, and crumbling sea walls. Self-taught, he transforms industrial decline and coastal change into meditations on memory and resilience, capturing beauty in unexpected places and inviting reflection on the past and present. Ron Crichton has exhibited in online exhibitions, including the Doncaster Art Fair. His artistic experience is shaped by his work in a complex environment where he distills complexity into simple, practical solutions that create lasting positive change. A creative mindset is instrumental in his daily work, fostering problem-solving and innovation. This approach influences his art, where he transforms industrial and coastal landscapes into abstract reflections on resilience and transformation.
Selected Work
Name: Sea Wall
Sea Wall is an abstract exploration of Redcar’s iconic coastline. Thick layers of acrylic in deep greens, purples, and burnt orange capture the sea wall’s resilience against the North Sea. The work evokes the ever-changing moods of the sea and reflects the enduring relationship between land, sea, and community.
The painting/cutout is based on a photo from the 1930s when constructing skyscrapers became a strong drive, and the competition to build the world’s tallest building was fierce. I used this image as a symbol of human desire. I replaced the ridiculous-looking hats in the photo with more recent tall buildings, indicating ongoing development and devastation to our environment, using a lone frog to represent nature.
