Scott Dunwoodie
Artist Bio
I create hand-printed photographic works using silver gelatin emulsion on wood and paper. Blending digital photography with darkroom techniques, my work explores motion, architecture and everyday objects. Each piece is unique, with hand-applied emulsion and distressed textures adding a painterly, tactile quality. The image and surface are treated as one, often framed by the material itself. I have taken part in York Open Studios for the past three consecutive years, exhibiting my work to a broad public audience in a professional open studio setting. This experience has involved curating and presenting finished work, engaging with visitors about my practice, and maintaining a high standard of display and communication throughout each event.
Artwork
Name: Horse Race Blur
This work captures a fleeting moment from a York horse race using slow shutter speed to blur motion and suggest time’s passage. Hand- printed with silver gelatin emulsion on wood, the image becomes part of the surface. Time compresses action, memory, and material into one enduring, yet transient, visual trace.
The painting/cutout is based on a photo from the 1930s when constructing skyscrapers became a strong drive, and the competition to build the world’s tallest building was fierce. I used this image as a symbol of human desire. I replaced the ridiculous-looking hats in the photo with more recent tall buildings, indicating ongoing development and devastation to our environment, using a lone frog to represent nature.
