Artist Bio
I am an amateur painter inspired by the shifting colour and atmosphere of my local environment.
Based in Redcar, I am self taught and work mainly in acrylic on canvas. The first two pieces are a departure from my usual process as they are set in an urban environment. My aim is to explore the experience of a precise moment from separate locations. Does the uniformity of the subject matter and precise moment of image capture evoke the same response in the painter and viewer? The third piece, "open", is older and contrasts the rich visual experience of exposed coastal habitat against its gradual loss over time.

Name: Five o’clock shadow #1
My aim is to explore the experience of a precise moment from separate locations. Does the uniformity of the subject matter and precise moment of image capture evoke the same response in the painter and viewer? One of two studies of light casting shadow in the landscape. Captured at precise moments in separate locations.
The painting/cutout is based on a photo from the 1930s when constructing skyscrapers became a strong drive, and the competition to build the world’s tallest building was fierce. I used this image as a symbol of human desire. I replaced the ridiculous-looking hats in the photo with more recent tall buildings, indicating ongoing development and devastation to our environment, using a lone frog to represent nature.
