Artist Bio

Originally from Japan, Miria Miria has lived and worked across Asia, Oceania, and the UK. Her artistic journey began in her 50s, bringing a distinct perspective shaped by diverse cultural and political environments. She holds a First-Class Honours BA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths, University of London, and an MFA with Distinction from BALTIC x Northumbria University. She has exhibited both in the UK and overseas, including solo exhibitions in Melbourne and Redcar. Since her student days, she has also been deeply interested in organising and curating exhibitions. These include On the Threshold series, hosted by the Oriental Museum and Teikyo University in Durham, as well as the Planetarity and Encounter series, which explored themes of environment and sustainability. She continues this curatorial and creative practice at Redcar Contemporary Art Gallery, her creative home, where she explores the layered relationships between human and non-human worlds.

Selected Work

Name: Twelve Plus

This body of work unfolds through two interconnected, precariously balanced installations assembled from discarded plastics and uranium glass, which strikingly fluoresces under black light.

Twelve Plus forms a clock-like circle of twelve small assemblages, evoking Chronos—measured, constructed time—while two larger central forms embody Kairos, moments of felt transformation.
