Artist Bio
I try to theme my work around small narrative moments. Performing as much as a documentarian than as a painter, my projects usually feature multiple paintings of the same day or event from several angles, or even the same topic revisited over a number of years. This means the projects are often of a rolling nature, never quite finished, allowing both the subject and the work to evolve and change over time. My practice is observational in terms of subject, loose and graphic in style. An attempt to find the moments of meaning in situations that often go unnoticed.
Artwork
Name: The Neds (with Ray Briar and the boys at Whitley Bay)
A group of boys at the water’s edge pose for the viewer. Inscription round the painting’s border reads: ‘When it snows will you also fall softly to earth? And then rise back up again with the snow’s evaporation? When it rains will you be there in the spectral arch that spans from firth to ground? In this way can you live forever? I think so.’
The painting/cutout is based on a photo from the 1930s when constructing skyscrapers became a strong drive, and the competition to build the world’s tallest building was fierce. I used this image as a symbol of human desire. I replaced the ridiculous-looking hats in the photo with more recent tall buildings, indicating ongoing development and devastation to our environment, using a lone frog to represent nature.
